Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands

"Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands" adalah lagu teritorial resmi Kepulauan Virgin Britania Raya (sering disebut BVI). Lagu ini digubah oleh kakak beradik Kareem Nelson Hull dan Ayana Hull, keduanya adalah penduduk Kepulauan Virgin. Lagu ini diadopsi sebagai lagu teritorial melalui resolusi Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Kepulauan Virgin Britania Raya pada tanggal 24 Juli 2012. Sebagai Wilayah Seberang Laut Britania, Kepulauan Virgin mempertahankan "God Save the King" sebagai lagu kebangsaan resminya.

Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Kepulauan Virgin, Myron Walwyn, mengumumkan pada bulan Desember 2011 bahwa pemerintahan ke-6 akan mengadakan "Kompetisi Lagu dan Pakaian Teritorial". Walwyn menjelaskan bahwa pemerintahnya ingin mengadopsi "lagu dan pakaian teritorial yang mewujudkan siapa kita sebagai rakyat" dan akan "menanamkan kebanggaan Kepulauan Virgin dan memberikan rasa identitas yang lebih besar".[1] Menteri mengakui bahwa pemerintah sebelumnya telah memulai proses yang sama pada tahun 2005. Menteri menambahkan bahwa "proses baru ini akan memungkinkan untuk menerima entri dari basis yang lebih luas dan memberikan kesempatan kepada para pengirim sebelumnya untuk mendefinisikan ulang dan mengirimkan karya mereka".[1]
Mantan Menteri Kebudayaan, Ibu Eileene L. Parsons dipilih untuk menjadi ujung tombak Komite ad hoc untuk Pakaian dan Lagu Teritorial. Anggota komite lainnya adalah Ny. Sheila Brathwaite, Dr. Charles Wheatley, Ny. Delores Christopher, dan Penjabat Direktur Kebudayaan, Ny. Brenda Lettsome-Tye. Dua puluh empat karya diterima untuk Kompetisi Lagu Teritorial.[2] Ultimately, three songs were chosen as the finalists: "Virgin Islands, Land I Love", "Wonder of Creation: The Beautiful Virgin Islands" and the winning song.[2] Anggota masyarakat kemudian diundang untuk memberikan suara secara daring untuk lagu pilihan mereka.[2]
Presentasi terbuka para finalis Kompetisi Lagu dan Busana Teritorial diselenggarakan oleh pemerintah pada hari Minggu, 10 Juni 2012, dalam sebuah perayaan yang bertajuk "Mendefinisikan Diri Sendiri: Kisah Kepulauan Virgin dalam Busana dan Lagu."[3][4] Presentasi diadakan di Auditorium Eileen L. Parsons (dinamai untuk menghormati Ketua Komite Lagu dan Busana Teritorial) di H. Lavity Stoutt Community College pada pukul 15.00.[5] The Premier and the Culture Minister both delivered separate remarks at the Presentation. During the Presentation, the three finalist songs were performed. Although, the winning song was originally composed with the name "Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands" it has frequently been performed as "Oh, British Virgin Islands". On the day of the Presentation, it was indeed performed as "Oh, British Virgin Islands".[6]
Following a robust debate in the House of Assembly, the winning song received 10 votes out of a possible 13 votes from the elected members. Two Opposition members were absent while the former Culture Minister, the Hon. Andrew Fahie abstained based on the process that was being used.[7] By that resolution (as rectified by the resolution below), the territorial song was chosen. The following is the text of the resolution (which also approved the official Territorial dress):[8]
THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS
RESOLUTION NO. 18 OF 2012

WHEREAS on the 24th day of July, 2012, the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands approved, by Resolution No. 12 of 2012, Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands by Ayana Hull as the Territorial Song and collaborative design by Ms. Kristin Frazer and Mrs. Florence Phillips design, as the Territorial Dress;
AND WHEREAS on the 24th day of July, 2012 the House of Assembly by the said Resolution No. 12 of 2012 did recognise Ms. Ayana Hull as the composer/writer of Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands instead of recognising Ms. Ayana Hull and Mr. Kareen Nelson Hull as having collaborated on the song.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands by Ayana Hull and Kareem Hull is the Territorial Song and the collaborative design by Ms. Kristin Frazer and Mrs. Florence Phillips, is the Territorial Dress.

Pengadopsian lagu teritorial diikuti pada tahun 2016 dengan pengadopsian ikrar teritorial. Ikrar Kepulauan Virgin sekarang diucapkan oleh anak-anak sekolah di wilayah tersebut setiap hari sekolah. Adopsi ini dimaksudkan sebagai inisiatif Pemerintah lain yang bertujuan untuk menanamkan 'kebanggaan Kepulauan Virgin'.
